3-D Secure Payment Scheme

Considering the statistics and number of scams reported to the ACCC (Australian Competition & Consumer Commission) each month, we are committed to offering our customers an additional security layer for their online credit and debit transactions by implementing the 3-D Secure payment scheme as part of our checkout process.

What is a 3-D Secure payment scheme?

A system invented and designed overseas, 3-D Secure is an extra layer of security for online transactions. The intent of this system is to prevent other people making online payments using your card details without your permission and purchases fraudulently. Through the merchant service provider, the scheme is a combined service offered to the market under the names ‘Verified by Visa’ and ‘MasterCard SecureCode’.

How the 3-D Secure payment scheme helps?

The 3-D Secure payment scheme helps decrease risk in two ways:

  • Without your password, writing down the numbers on the card, modifying terminals and ATMs do not result in the ability to make purchases on the Internet.
  • In the event that your card details are stolen or copied, there is no way for the thieves or hackers to get the password tied to your card.

How does the concept of a 3-D Secure payment scheme work?

In the name itself, this security layer is a 3-Domain model. The three domains are:

  • The bank to which the online transaction is going
  • The bank which issued the credit/debit card
  • The infrastructure supporting the 3-D Secure system

During the online checkout, the bank which issued you the card might present you with the authentication screen after your card details are entered. Each card-issuing bank could have its own authentication method, but typically, a password-based method is used, and it is a one-time password. On the authentication screen, the 3-D Secure payment scheme requires the customer to enter a one-time password which his/her card-issuing bank will provide via the email or SMS linked to the card. Within seconds, the bank will confirm if it is a genuine online purchase and then whether or not authenticate the transaction. If you do not see the authentication screen presented to you, you can continue with confidence as your card-issuing bank is already protecting your card.

If you are unsure about your card-issuing bank’s authentication method or your card does not support the 3-D Secure payment scheme, contact your bank directly to find out.

You can be confident that your private information is safe and secure. Both Verified by Visa and MasterCard SecureCode provide the necessary protection to keep your private data from hacking.
